Social Security Disability – What are Compassionate Allowances?

When applying for Social Security disability, it can seem like a never-ending process filled with endless paperwork and long waits.  This is one of the reasons our clients benefit from hiring McDivitt.  We take care of the “heavy lifting” and utilize our expertise to guide you through the process.  However, in some cases, it is important for our clients to begin receiving disability benefits as soon as possible due to the severity of their disability.  There is light at the end of a much shorter tunnel in some cases, and it comes in the form of Compassionate Allowances.

The Social Security Administration has a list of over 200 specified conditions that fall in to the Compassionate Allowance category. After observing the list, you can see that Compassionate Allowance conditions are very severe.  Some examples are advanced cancers, rare neurological disorders, and extreme illnesses and syndromes that lead to obvious disabilities.  Not included on this list are the most common causes of disability such as back pain, joint disorders, and severe depression or anxiety.

The Compassionate Allowance process permits applicants with severe medical issues to receive benefits faster.  Sometimes this expedited process can be completed within weeks, instead of months, after applying.  If you have a disability that you believe falls under the Compassionate Allowance umbrella, you still must prove your disability.  If your ailment truly falls under one of these categories, your case will meet listing requirements that will establish disability without the detailed analysis of your ability to perform work-related tasks.
