And the Safest Driving State in the Country is…Colorado!
According to Allstate’s annual America’s Best Drivers Report ®, Colorado has made the top 10 list more than any other state. The safest city in Colorado this year according to the report is Fort Collins coming in at 17, with Colorado Springs coming in at 21 and Lakewood at 33. On top of that, Thorton, CO recently joined the list as the 41st safest driving city in the country. Way to go Coloradans, for showing others how safe we can be driving. Some of the worst cities in America were Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Boston, which was number 200.
But even with this esteemed acknowledgment, car crashes are still happening on our roads every day. According to the Colorado State Patrol, we have already had 261 fatalities on Colorado highways this year. In order to prevent traffic incidents, we need to make an effort to be better prepared on the road, and free from distractions.
Ways to Be Safer on the Road
So, what are some ways you can be safer when you are behind the wheel? The American Red Cross has provided a list of ways to be prepared when you are on the highway that include:
- Wearing your seatbelt
- Stay alert, don’t drive drowsy
- Use caution in work zones
- Pay attention
- Observe speed limits
- Be respectful of other motorists and follow the rules of the road
- Don’t tailgate
- Don’t drink and drive, designate a sober driver
- Clean your headlights, taillights, and windows
- Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches or in inclement weather
- If you have car trouble, pull off the road as far as possible
Also, make sure that your car is in prime condition before you head out on the road.
According to the National Safety Council’s Injury Facts 2016, its annual report on unintentional injuries, the top causes of fatalities on the road include:
- Alcohol (30.8%)
- Speeding (30%)
- Distracted Driving (26%)
All three of which, are behaviors we can prevent.
Defensive Driver Safety Training
One way you can help continue Colorado as the safest state to drive in, is to take advantage of a defensive driving course. According to Injury Facts, the average economic cost due to a crash was more than $1 million per death and more than $78,000 for a nonfatal disabling injury. A defensive driving course could be helpful in preventing an outcome like that. If you are interested in taking a defensive driving course you can check an online course out at defensivedriving.com, or look for one in your area. Defensive driving is “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.”
Specifically, defensive driving is a form of training that goes beyond just understanding the rules of the road and basics of driving. It aims to reduce the risk of a car crash by teaching students to anticipate dangerous situations. This type of thought process and technique can be achieved through adhering to general guidelines, as well as, the practice of specific driving techniques. The courses are intended to teach you how to be more alert, aware, and safe on the road.
Defensive driving courses may be especially useful for many drivers, including:
- New drivers
- Drivers desiring ticket dismissal
- Drivers with a poor driving record
- Drivers that need to reduce auto insurance rates
This is simply something to consider, so that we can keep Colorado as the safest driving state.
