Boulder’s cycling community has grown exponentially in recent years, with estimates showing more than twice as many residents biking to work compared to 2000 statistics. Unfortunately, with this increase in volume has also come an increase in Colorado Personal Injuries involving bicycles. In an effort to stop this growing problem, the city has implemented a new pilot program aimed at raising community awareness about bicycle lanes.
A story from 9 News stated that the City of Boulder’s transportation division has initiated the first step in the project by installing high-visibility, fluorescent paint on the bicycle lane along Folsom Street at the corners of Canyon Boulevard and Pearl Street. The Bright green paint is also going to be laid down along Colorado Avenue and Table Mesa Drive.
Officials say the paint is intended to reduce the number of “right-hook” collisions at these intersections, one of the most common types of accidents involving motorists and cyclists in Boulder. A “right-hook” collision occurs when a car turning right at an intersection strikes a bicyclist traveling in the same direction but going straight through the intersection. This type of crash accounts for 14 percent of all crashes between motorists and cyclists in the city.
