10 Ways to Avoid an Auto Accident

tips to avoid auto accidentsThe Team here at McDivitt Law Firm knows how traumatic and life-changing an auto accident can be. Unfortunately, car accidents are very common, but there are ways to decrease your chances of getting into one. The best way to avoid getting in a car crash is to practice safe driving habits.

So, we’ve come up with a list of 10 tips to prevent an auto accident, and here they are:

  1. Always keep your eyes scanning ahead.

You don’t just want to merely look in front of you, but you want to scan all directions ahead of you. This way, you will be able to increase your chances of seeing a potential problem on the road, and thus, allow you to properly react to the situation.

  1. Beware of blind spots.

Yes, we have all heard of blind spots, but it is so important to be aware of them. Make sure that your side mirrors and rearview mirror are set for you. Always check those mirrors when changing lanes and turning. However, you can’t solely rely on these, a quick turn of your head when changing lanes will help. Also, consider getting a car with a blind spot warning system. This system will catch other vehicles in your blind spots that you can’t see in your mirrors and will warn you.

  1. Drive with your hands in the 9 and 3 o’clock positions on the steering wheel.

This is the best position for your hands on the wheel as it will provide you with the best control of your vehicle. Steering with one hand or hands resting at the bottom of the wheel will increase your chances of getting in a car accident.

  1. Know your car’s limits.

You need to understand your cars limits. Such as how fast it can go, how it reacts in a turn, or how it handles in snow or rain. If you don’t know these things you won’t be able to handle your car. Also, if you know how your car reacts to these situations, you will know when not to drive it.

  1. Keep your car in good shape.

Keep the maintenance up to date on your car. That includes oil changes, tire rotations, and mileage check-ups. Also, don’t forget that different seasons may require different car maintenance.

  1. Don’t drive distracted.

It’s so important to not drive distracted. Driving requires our brains to concentrate on a lot of different aspects. Just one little distraction, like changing the radio station, takes our focus off of some aspect of our driving and the road.

  1. Don’t speed.

We have speed limits for a reason. Let’s follow them! Estimates have shown that 900 drivers die from speeding in the U.S. every month.

  1. Limit your night driving.

Nighttime driving not only decreases visibility of the road, but for many, it’s also the time of day where fatigue can really catch up to us. If you are driving at night, remember to always have your headlights on, and if on a dark road, your bright headlights.

  1. Train for poor weather conditions.

Poor weather conditions make for poor driving conditions. Make sure you know how to handle your car in the snow and rain (link to hydroplaning blog). This often entails driving at slower speeds and breaking sooner. If the weather is too bad, and you don’t need to be anywhere, don’t get in your car.

  1. Be courteous to other drivers.

Auto accidents can occur from confrontations with aggressive drivers or simple from people who are not paying attention. If you are courteous to other drivers you will certainly decrease your chances of getting into an auto accident.
