Colorado law requires drivers to immediately report all car accidents to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
When the police respond to your car accident and interview the involved parties, their report satisfies your obligation to report the accident. However, there are times when police won’t be able to respond to your crash or when they won’t need to respond. In those instances, reporting the accident is up to you.
If you need to report your own accident, you can usually file it online here: https://crash.state.co.us/
Before you file your own accident report
The Colorado DMV only accepts online accident reports in certain circumstances. Before you fill one out, make sure each of the following statements is true:
- There were no fatalities in your car accident
- No one was injured in your car accident
- It was not a hit-and-run crash
- No public property was damaged
- There was no suspicion that anyone involved was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
If your accident doesn’t meet these requirements, you will have to call law enforcement to report the crash.
What you need before you file online
Before you can file your Colorado car accident report online, you will need to make sure you have the following information:
- Your name and date of birth
- The names of anyone else involved in the accident
- Vehicle and insurance information for both parties
- Details of the accident, including location, date and time
Call the police instead
Online accident reports are a good answer for anyone involved in a minor accident with little or no property damage and who is absolutely confident no one was hurt.
Remember, car accident injuries can take time to be realized and you want to make sure you get the treatment you need right away even if you don’t feel you suffered any major trauma.
While calling authorities and getting medical treatment can be inconvenient, it’s critical that you look out for your health and legal rights from the very beginning.
