General Motors is recalling these vehicles for a manufacturing flaw resulting in engines shutting off without warning, even when the vehicles are in motion.  In addition, because the vehicle’s systems are cut off,  in these cases the airbags can fail to deploy causing accidents with serious injuries and fatalities.

General Motors is accused of delaying the recall after the ignition switch problem was initially detected in 2004.

According to multiple news outlets, including The New York Times, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR, GM had information about the faulty ignition switch for more than a decade. However, the company only recalled the effected vehicles in February of 2014.

While GM is currently reporting that there were about 30 vehicles involved in accidents related to the faulty ignition switch, one consumer advocacy group estimates that more than 300 deaths are a result of the company’s negligence. The Center for Auto Safety commissioned a study which reviewed cases in which air bags failed to deploy. According to The New York Times, the group wrote a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and “…criticized the agency for not detective the air bag failures, as well as the defective ignition switch.” [New York Times, March 13, 2014]
