Freezing Your Credit is the Most Effective Tool You Have Against Economic Theft – And It’s Easy To Do!

Once a credit (or security) freeze has been placed on your credit reports, credit card issuers, lenders and others can’t review the summary of loans and payments that makes up your credit history. Without that information, lenders won’t issue credit. This means criminals can’t set up fraudulent accounts in your name.

All three credit agencies, Equifax, Experian and Transunion allow you to seal your credit reports and use a personal identification number (PIN) that only you know and can use to temporarily “thaw” your credit for a set period of time so that legitimate applications for credit and services can be processed. That added layer of security means that thieves cannot establish new credit in your name even if they are able to obtain your ID.

Freezing your credit files has no impact whatsoever on your existing lines of credit, such as credit cards. You can continue to use them as you regularly would even when your credit is frozen.

There is no cost to freeze your credit report, The cost to “thaw” your reports for one creditor — or for a specific period of time say, one month, six months etc. is $10.
